OFFICIAL : Luis Enrique appointed as coach of AS Roma



AS Roma has today official confirmed the appointment of Luis Enrique Martinez as coach of the Italian team for next season. The Asturian, who has been in charge of Barça B for the last three seasons, has signed a two-year deal with the Serie A club, with the option for a third year.


Luis Enrique announced a few weeks ago that he would be leaving Barça B at the end of the season. This season, he led the reserve side to a historic third place finish, making them the best B team in FC Barcelona history. Today, AS Roma has officially confirmed that Luis Enrique will be their new coach.

Luis Enrique, who during his career as a player never left the Spanish league (having played for Sporting Gijon, Real Madrid and Barca), will now face a new challenge in his fourth year as a coach as he heads to the Italian capital.

The agreement with the club provides, according to Italian media, a record 1.6 million euros per season to the coach.

Together with Luis Enrique, Roma will have the services of his assistants Toñín Llorente, Roberto Moreno, Iván de la Peña and physical trainer Rafael Cabanellas.

The statement of AS Roma’s official site reads:

Luis Enrique had his first taste of the giallorosso (yellow and red), when this afternoon he crossed the threshold of the home of the club, the “Fulvio Bernardini” in Trigoria. Together with some of his staff, the Spanish coach visited the club and its facilities, after greeting the leaders of the club and a sharing a quick meal.

In the coming days the coach, together with the staff, will begin to the detailed planning of all activities pertaining to the forthcoming season 2011-12.
